Congrats to all the students who participated in Summer Strings. The concert turned out really well. It always amazes me how the students can pull off such a nice performance with only 5 days of rehearsals!!!

Summer Strings Deadline EXTENDED!

Good news for those of you who have procrastinated!!! We have extended the deadline to register for summer strings until Tuesday. Please mail or drop off registration forms ASAP to meet this "discounted" deadline. If your child receives free and/or reduced lunch you may email me for details on a even greater discounted rate. Our numbers are low, I really hope you are considering enrolling in the camp!

Each year the PJHS staff members each get to nominate one student who they feel is a champion at Parkside, this can be in and/or out of the classroom. This year I chose 7th grader Natalie Janik. Natalie is an amazing student, she works hard and is always ready to learn, but that is not why I chose her. I chose her because of her contagious spirit, her enthusiasm is unmistakable and so wonderful to have around. I am really going to miss her as I go to Evans and she stays here at PJHS but I know that she will make the transition for the new instructor an easy one. Congratulations Natalie!!!!

Congratulations to the PJHS 7th & 8th Grade Orchestras! Both groups performed today at Chiddix for the IESA Organizational Contest and BOTH groups received and overall Division I rating. 7th graders received two division I's and one division II rating, while the 8th grade orchestra received a division I score from all three judges. Nice work pythons!!!!

Summer Strings Info

If you currently have a student enrolled in one of my classes you have probably already received an email from me about Summer Strings. This year Summer Strings will be held at Kingsley Jr. High School from June 6th thru June 10th from 9-11 a.m. The camp will conclude with a concert on Friday, June 10th at 11:30 a.m. in the KJHS Cafeteria. There will be a Pool Party (cost included in registration) on Thursday June 9th from 830-1030 p.m. at Fairview Family Aquatic Center. You can download/print the registration form by clicking HERE
Students who register prior to May 28th will receive a break in the tuition fee AND receive 10 pts. extra credit if their parents email me to let me know they have registered!!!!

Field Trip TOMORROW!!!

Tomorrow is the big day, our field trip to the Peoria Symphony. I am really excited to share this opportunity with our students, it should be educational, fun and memorable:)
Please remember students need to report to the orchestra room by 8:15 a.m. tomorrow (Tuesday) and be ready to go. They should bring coats if needed and themselves, nothing else is required (or desired) for this trip, their tickets, transportation and lunch (at Monical's) is already taken care of. I would really like for the students to dress nice for this concert, we have discussed in class what I feel is acceptable dress and behavior for the concert. Please let me know if you have any questions.

7th & 8th grade orchestras will perform on Saturday, April 30th, 2011 @ IESA Organizational Contest, being held at Chiddix Jr. High. This is a required performance for ALL 7th and 8th grade orchestra members. Dress will be concert dress (black/white) and more detailed information will come home at a later date. Here are times as they stand currently:

Warm-up: 10:50 a.m.
Perform: 11:20 a.m.

One Week til our Trip!

One Week from TODAY until our field trip to see the Peoria Symphony Orchestra.
Students are asked to wear nice clothing (nicer than everyday school clothes, but not formal) for our trip, this is a professional orchestra and we need to represent PJHS well. Clothing should still be comfortable as we have to ride the bus and students will be in part of their 1st/7th & 8th hour classes here at school. Any questions email or ask Mrs. Boyd.

Congratulations to Amanda (7th grade orchestra member) who is the winner of the Money Smart Kids Essay Contest this year. She received her prize at the Money Smart Week kick-off luncheon on Friday last week. As winner of the essay contest, Amanda received a $2000 Bright Start Scholarship from the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office. You may remember that to enter this contest, McLean County 6-8^th graders were asked to submit a 500-word essay answering this year’s money smart question. Amanda wrote the essay as part of Mrs. Prevo’s Language Arts class last quarter.

Field Trip

Our field trip is only a little over a week away, the students and I are getting very excited. Unfortunately the costs of the trip are quite high (a little more than expected) due to the increase in gas costs and thus the district increasing the fees we must pay for our buses. The plan is for the orchestra to pay for travel (we already purchased the tickets in the fall, using our fall fundraisers and raffle money) and for lunch at Monical's. If you think you won't be able to attend our next fundraiser at Monical's on April 12th and would like to donate money towards our field trip expenses we would gladly accept them:)
This is going to be a great experience for our orchestra and I can't wait to share the story of our trip with you!

This Friday at the end of the day we are having an assembly at PJHS. The 7th & 8th Grade orchestra students will be performing "Final Countdown" with 8th grader Caroline Lipka playing a solo. This will be the same piece we did at Unit Orchestra last week.
There will be an extra rehearsal on Friday morning at 7 a.m. for the students to combine and rehearse. Students should wear a PJHS Orchestra or Unit 5 Orchestra shirt if they have it, otherwise PJHS Spirit wear would be appropriate.

Unit Performance

Great job PJ students at our Unit Orchestra concert last night at Normal West. As you could tell by the sheer numbers there our program is growing and even stronger than ever before, we filled the floor and bleachers (without even having any high school performers,) and that is a great problem to have. As usual thanks to the many students and parents who helped with clean-up after the concert, it is VERY much appreciated. I hope you are as excited as I am to keep moving forward and start some new music!!!

Two weeks from today, on Friday February 18th, we will have a Solo & Ensemble recital during our class times. This is an opportunity for our students (7th & 8th graders) who are participating to perform their contest pieces for each other and the class.
